On average, every school gets 13 CVs every year. Does it sound amazing to you? We bet now you imagined how many competitors you have and started to worry. But there are no reasons for worries. Yes, the competition is high but you should put some effort to stand out from the crowd. And a perfect teacher cover letter will help you do that.

If your teacher cover letter is the same as the rest, they will open it and close the same moment without even reading it till the end. They read hundreds of similar letters and if it doesn’t stand out and isn’t special, no one will pay attention to it. So, if writing a teacher cover letter is not your forte, you will need to practice a bit to increase your chances.

This post will help you do it. Below, you will find tips and learn all the tricks on how to write your teacher cover letter. So, before you even start to work on it, learn all the information thoroughly and make sure you know how to write your cover letter correctly. It will help you get your position hassle-free!

What to start from

Don’t hurry up to start writing your letter at once. You should do some things before starting. Do not neglect those steps while they are crucial for your success:

  • Devote enough time. It is important to understand that such an important letter cannot be writing without a couple of hours. Like any other important essay, this one requires your time. We recommend starting to write it at least three days ahead of the application date. Of course, if you plan to succeed.
  • Different schools need different cover letters. Once again, spare no effort or time to do your research and fund out what the requirements of the different schools are and write a separate letter for each of them.
  • Don’t duplicate the information in the cover letter and CV. Do not provide the same information in your CV and cover letter, there is no need to. They both should contain different information while they will be read by the same people. We recommend thinking beforehand what information you want to be included in your CV (the history of your job experience and skills you obtained) and in your cover letter (why you want the position and what makes you a good candidate).
  • Include references. Having someone who would confirm your achievements and experience is crucial. So when working on your teacher cover letter, include this information, too. You can ask your college professors, for example.

Helpful tips

Pay attention to the following tips that will make your writing process much easier:

  1. Note the differences in the facilities of elementary schools, colleges, universities, courses, etc. Don’t forget how they differ from one another and make sure to have relevant experience.
  2. Make a call to the educational establishment (in case they don’t state that they do not accept phone calls) and find out the full name of the person who will read your teacher cover letter.
  3. Make sure your teacher cover letter responds to the specific job description. Include the skills and qualifications necessary to apply for the position.
  4. Confirm your words with evidence. If you stated certain information in your cover letter, it should be supported by such evidence as diplomas, certificates, etc. Never lie about your experience or obtained skills.
  5. Find out what kind of achievements a particular educational establishment has. You should know why you want to work for them, so tell them what is so special about them that made you want to become a part of their team.
  6. Add your extra skills. You should not only be a good teacher but possess some additional qualities, such as having good organization skills or whatever you think could be helpful for the establishment.
  7. Order everything in the form of the list. It will be very helpful for your reader and we are sure he or she will appreciate it. When it is clear you care about your reader, it will work to your advantage
  8. Apply for help to the Internet. You can always find some help on the web if you are not sure how to write something. You can find lots of teacher cover letter examples on the web or even order it from a professional writer. There is no shame in using professional help or the help of other users.
  9. Keep your cover letter (as any other document) tidy.
  10. Keep your sentences as short as possible.
  11. If the paragraphs are too long, divide them into smaller ones.
  12. Stick to the classic styling and fonts only.
  13. There should be some space between the parts of your teacher cover letter.

The structure of a teacher cover letter

A cover letter is a very brief document covering some of your skills and your wish to be accepted to a particular educational establishment as a teacher (and, of course, the reasons for which you are the best of the candidates). “Brief” is a very wide notion for everyone, isn’t it? So let’s make sure that a brief teacher cover letter shouldn’t be longer than one page. It looks like a sort of essay that you used to write in college or university.
And your teacher cover letter should consist of three paragraphs only. Let’s look at each of them in detail:

  • The first paragraph. The introduction part is aimed to grab the attention of your audience, so, it should be exceptionally eye-catching. The HR manager (i.e. your reader and audience) reads tons of cover letters every day. And all of them seem very similar, especially when they begin the same way.
  • The task is to make him or her to want to read your letter till the very end. So you should write your first paragraph in the way that it would catch his attention and interest at once.
  • In the introduction, you can provide the information about that particular establishment you are interested in. Provide your reasons for writing that letter and where you have found their offer. Don’t forget to mention one-three skills/qualifications that make you the best candidate for their position. Avoid being boring.
  • The second paragraph. This is your chance to convince your reader that you are the best person they need for their position. By no means, you should brag and write only about your best skills or valuable experience. It is essential to tell why you can be helpful for their school, so make sure to write about your possible contribution to that place.
  • Should not only be a great professional but have to contribute some of your experience to their establishment. Tell about your previous achievements and success. It is also important to give examples of how you used the skills you mentioned in your career. This part is the longest one.
  • The third paragraph. The third paragraph is a conclusion of your whole cover letter. It should be pretty short and summarize everything you mentioned before. Once again, mention your interest in the proposed position and thank the reader for his or her attention.
  • In the end, write your contact information and your wish to keep discussing it during your interview. The signature and the date are the last part of your cover letter. If you write an e-mail, include your electronic signature.

Dear Mr. or Ms. (Last Name),

I have come across a teaching position in your elementary school on your website. Your establishment is a well-known leader in the English language among all the elementary schools in our city. I was highly impressed by the achievements of your language club. I have a large experience in teaching first-third grade students and apart from my classroom work, I have been good at arranging language contests.

I am sure that my working experience and leadership skills will be very helpful in your school. I am intended to contribute to the success of your school by preparing students and winning the Olympiads on the state level. I have several working plans for reaching this goal and some valuable experience in preparing second-grade students for such events.

Thank you for your time spent to read about my personality. I hope to keep discussing our common goals in the interview. I’ve attached the CV and hopefully, it will help you learn more about my work and skills. I hope to get your reply soon.

Yours,
James Hoopeston
